WEEE: EU announces amendment to the WEEE Directive
The amendments affect the collection and treatment of waste from older photovoltaic modules and waste electrical and electronic equipment (WEEE).
On 19.03.2024, the European Union announced in its Official Journal, Series L, that the EU Commission had amended Directive 2012/19/EU (WEEE Directive) on waste electrical and electronic equipment (WEEE) with Directive (EU) 2024/884.
Articles 12 to 15 of the WEEE Directive have been corrected, including with regard to the collection and treatment of waste from photovoltaic modules placed on the market before August 13, 2012 and all electrical and electronic equipment placed on the market before August 15, 2018. In addition, the new Article 24a stipulates that the Commission must submit an assessment of the need to revise this Directive by December 31, 2026 at the latest.
