Toyota Motor North America Receives $4.5 Million DOE Grant for EV Battery Recycling
Toyota has received a $4.5 million grant from the U.S. Department of Energy to promote a circular economy for electric vehicle batteries. The project aims to develop an innovative recycling concept for the future.
Toyota Motor North America has been awarded a $4.5 million grant from the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) to advance electric vehicle battery recycling. The project, led by the Toyota Research Institute of North America (TRINA), aims to establish an industry standard for a sustainable battery recycling facility.
The DOE's Advanced Research Projects Agency-Energy program is designed to support a domestic circular economy for EV batteries. Under the leadership of project manager Nik Singh, Toyota is collaborating with the Oak Ridge National Laboratory, the National Renewable Energy Laboratory, and energy technology company Baker Hughes to develop a robotic battery disassembly process.
The project focuses on automating battery pack disassembly, data-driven battery classification, and addressing cell degradation. As the adoption of electric vehicles grows, the demand for efficient recycling processes increases. Automakers and suppliers are investing billions to take advantage of government incentives and accelerate the transition to electric mobility.
Researchers are also developing advanced diagnostic tools and new methods for repurposing battery cells for future energy systems. With the rising volume of end-of-life batteries and battery waste worldwide, a new strategy is needed to extend the lifespan of standard battery components.
“We will develop processes
to efficiently reuse and refurbish valuable battery cells and modules from
end-of-life battery packs without having to scan every single battery pack
individually,” said Marm Dixit from the Oak Ridge National Laboratory. “By
extending the lifespan of battery components, we reduce the total emissions per
mile driven.”
