From 2025 onwards there are four UN numbers aligned to electric vehicles:
UN 3171 for vehicles NOT powered by lithium ion batteries, lithium metal batteries or sodium ion batteries
UN 3556 Vehicle, lithium ion battery powered
UN 3557 Vehicle, lithium metal battery powered
UN 3558 Vehicle, sodium ion battery powered
Our team from ABS All Battery Service is already preparing the checklists for those new UN numbers so that you´ll have them as a guideline to ship those vehicles compliantly from 2025 onwards.
The reduced state of charge or reduced capacity for the lithium ion or sodium ion batteries powering the electric vehicle is currently the subject of heated debate, as it is due to become mandatory in air transport from 2026. However, vehicle manufacturers still see a great need for discussion in the customer's application, as there are already ferry operators and shipping companies that only transport vehicles with a reduced state of charge in sea transport and this is simply currently difficult to implement for a private individual who wants to use the ferry. We will inform you in our newsletter as soon as there is further information from the authorities. You can register for our Lithium Battery Service Newsletter here:

Regardless of whether you are shipping an entire battery-powered vehicle, just the vehicle battery, a prototype lithium battery without a UN 38.3 test or a damaged lithium battery, we have the right checklist in our Lithium Battery Service Portal to prepare the vehicle or lithium battery for transport.
The Lithium Battery Service Portal offers work instructions in checklist form, which contain all the information, labelling, accompanying documents and packaging instructions for each transport case in accordance with ADR, IMDG Code and ICAO-TI / IATA-DGR. This means you have everything bundled together, cannot overlook any requirements and ensure that your consignment reaches its destination without delay.
We support you in meeting your KPIs in the logistics area and you make your project managers and customers happy:
